Yesterday I shared a TikTok video recommending these six books, all by outdoorsy female authors, for fans of Cheryl Strayed’s Wild.
The response has been incredible, with 4,000 likes and hundreds of comments in less than 24 hours! I’m thrilled to have found a community of book-loving, adventurous women on TikTok.
Can’t wait to give and get more book recommendations in the future! Please comment here or on TikTok with any you think we’d love.
1. A Little More About Me by Pam Houston
A reviewer once described Pam Houston as “Bridget Jones meets Indiana Jones,” which is honestly goals. Her achingly beautiful words on wilderness, dogs, love, and international adventure have me convinced we’d be best friends, or at least Colorado soul sisters. (Also, she’s friends with Cheryl Strayed in real life!)
2. The Anthropology of Turquoise by Ellen Meloy
Beautiful essays about the desert and nature! Pulitzer Prize finalist. If you love Terry Tempest Williams or Ed Abbey, you’ll love Ellen Meloy. This summer found me reading everything Meloy I could get my hands on, and Turquoise is her most popular work (with good reason.)
3. If I Live Until Morning by Jean Muenchrath
True story of a woman who nearly died in a winter accident on Mount Whitney and her later journeys to the Himalayas.
4. Wanderlust: A History of Walking by Rebecca Solnit
Well-researched and fascinating, like everything Rebecca Solnit writes!
5. Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer
Everyone should read this book. Amazing blend of science with indigenous history and culture. I highlighted nearly the whole thing. đŸ™‚
6. Pure Land by Annette McGivney
Part memoir, part murder mystery. I listened to the audiobook 2 years ago on the way back from my backpacking trip to Havasupai and haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since.
7. Thru-Hiking Will Break Your Heart by Carrot Quinn
I missed this one in the TikTok because I don’t have a paper copy, but it’s the best thru-hiking book since Wild (and its spiritual successor.) Love!
