Real talk: so far, I’ve lost $37,000 in canceled contracts due to COVID-19.
And that’s just the work that was already signed and scheduled! I’m also mourning all the might-have-beens that now, never will be.
As I wrote on Instagram, the benefit of freelancing is there’s no single job loss that can destroy me. But there are new losses every week. Projects canceled, budgets slashed, entire teams of people I’ve worked with for years laid off in an instant.
It’s been tough, to say the least.
But after many anxious weeks of alternate panicking, procrasti-baking, and persistent brain fog, I’m finally starting to see some light.
Now, I have a new mantra for adapting myself and my business to this new normal. It’s SWAP, DON’T STOP.
Here’s what Swap, Don’t Stop means to me right now:
- Swapping my usual blog posts about travel for helpful tips on earning money remotely
- and, when the time is right, posts on traveling responsibly in the road trip renaissance —since cars will be the safest form of travel for the foreseeable future.
- and, when the time is right, posts on traveling responsibly in the road trip renaissance —since cars will be the safest form of travel for the foreseeable future.
- Swapping how I spend my money by supporting small businesses and solopreneurs even more than usual
- Swapping ideas and encouragement with fellow entrepreneurs on GoDaddy’s #OpenWeStand microsite
- Swapping out some of my previous freelance clients, whose marketing budgets were cut due to COVID-19, for new ones in less affected industries
If there’s anything I’ve learned from COVID-19, it’s that Community is Key. I couldn’t have made it through the past few months without my digital community (aka the only one any of us have right now) sharing sage advice and silly memes, referring me to new clients, and supporting me like woah.
That’s why I’m proud to partner with GoDaddy on the #OpenWeStand microsite — a resource for business owners to share tips and support each other. It’s full of inspirational small biz stories as well as tactical tips on things like applying for federal aid and re-negotiating contracts.
Comment below with a small business you love — even if it’s you!— and let me know how I can support you. We’re all dealing with a lot right now, but we don’t have to do it alone.
